Nintendo Wii Stomps Rivals

A great place to get your gaming news is consolemine.com. While browsing there I noticed an article containing the numbers I was recently wondering about…

Despite Xbox 360’s big sales during Black Friday Nintendo is in the lead building a huge gulf between them an all rivals. Nintendos Wii sold three for each Xbox bought during November reported NPD a research group. Four Nintendo titles were among the ten best selling games in November: Wii Play, Wii Music, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart. Wii’s motion-controlled games consoles held three top selling spots.

Colombia signs up for OLPC laptops with Windows – Network World

Network world is carrying the following story that details OLPC’s second Windows based deployment to South America. It looks like Microsoft will be heavily involved in this one:

The pilot programs are expected to expand over time.Download the latest Network World Executive Guide – Virtualization Reality CheckMicrosoft and OLPC will donate the XO laptops and work with teachers on how to use them in schools. The groups did not say how many laptops would be handed out as part of the trial nor when it would start.

Peru OLPC to trial Windows

Cnet is reporting today that

“Microsoft and the One Laptop Per Child project announced Monday that Peru will be the first country to try out XO laptops running Microsoft Windows as part of a nine-month pilot program.”

Which comes as a bit of a surprise to me, as I haven’t read anywhere that Windows runs well enough on an XO to be effective. In fact, there’s even the chance that the XO’s hardware configuration need be changed in order to support Microsoft’s OS. I guess Peru, aiming to have towards 150,000 XO units distributed to kids and teachers by the end of the year, is a good testing ground for software variations. We’ll be watching with interest!

HP OS to Counter Vista?

Geek News Central is musing over HP’s rumored plan to create an operating system for it’s own machines, open source flavour (to some degree). I haven’t actually installed or even really used much Vista at all, but it sounds like the experience is enough to make one of the worlds largest hardware vendors look elsewhere. Despite people’s general awareness of OSS and the success of Linux, Microsoft’s marketshare on desktop computers is almost entire. But if HP abandons Windows as their part-and-parcel OS solution..? That could be significant!
