GentXO

Unbeknownst to me, Chris has also had the opportunity to play around with an OLPC XO unit and – of course! – he’s done a custom Linux job for it. He’s put together an XO friendly install of Gentoo, bootable from a flash drive. The impetus came from the Sugar interface not being right for him (being a schoolleaver for many years now) and I think it really goes to show the potential flexibility inherent in the platform. The OLPC NYC program, who are looking at Ubuntu as an option for kids who “outgrow” their original OSs, obviously feel the same way.

I’m keen to see how it goes on my own unit! Photos to follow, no doubt…

Kororaa wraps up.

So the script-based, make-it-easy-for you installer “Kororaa” for Gentoo Linux has come to the end of it’s days. Chris spent a lot of time working on it and managed to develop a sizable community around the software. I know he also learned a lot about open source software and everything that comes with it (Specifically those pesky video diver licenses..) and a lot of people learned with him. Since there now are more comprehensive solutions available for easily installing Gentoo, Chris and Molly have decided to stop development.

So, goodbye Kororaa, but thanks for the good (and easy!) times with Gentoo!
