I almost missed this one. I hadn’t been paying attention and was a few weeks late to the Awake party, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Tycho. I’ve described them as a “sort of an accessible, upbeat Boards of Canada” in the past, which is a fairly big call. But then I just get asked who Boards of Canada are so it doesn’t matter. Tycho use a lot of classic analogue gear for their sound, which always scores points in my books. Australia was included in the Asia leg of their tour, and at $55 a ticket I bought two and headed to Sydney. Jules, who I’ve known for a very long time, was keen to come along. The Hi-Fi was a great little venue for a show like this and the sound was great. They played a mixed up version of most of the tracks from Awake combine with a few key tracks off Dive. Simple projections and lighting all set to the Tycho pallet rounded out the performance. Also, I had a whiskey sour with a prune in it! I’d do it all again in an instant.
