I keep coming back to this site: thesixtyone.com. I’ve decided that it’s a great site for music. How’s that? The web based music player is the best I’ve used. It’s a persistent banner at the top of the page that you can’t interrupt by surfing around the site that includes handy functions like download, save and heart. The music at TheSixtyOne features a whole stack of Creative Commons licensed music, so there’s a whole lot to download for free. Finding what you like seems to come naturally. The role playing element, unlocking features by listening to specific combinations of music, is an interesting and fresh way to encourage exploration of the library.

The Farm Trip ’09

Where would the Navy be without tradition? Captain Jack Aubrey often asks. And where would us groms be without the tradition of The Farm? At home playing computer games, that’s where. But we took a break from all that and headed once again to scenic Glennvista Coombs. Solon, Gibbo, James, Ben, Robbie, Lisa briefly, Tim briefly and a goanna experienced the lowest water levels in the river ever, but were still thankful for what was there in the 37c heat. I wanted to get get a pictorial this year but hangovers prevented all that. My first field test of the Meade telescope was only partially successful – I forgot the manual and really needed it. Still, the moon was fat and fast moving, and by chance I watched a satellite zoom by. There’s rumor of a second trip this year (most irregular..!) so i’ll be better prepared next time…

It’s amazing what gets you hits these days. Take Better Homes and Garden’s (US) tutorial on how to make a Halloween wreath. It’s a full page article that can be summed up in a single sentence. To make a pumpkin wreath, glue pumpkins to a wreath! Good advice. But not enough for poor She256:

I sometimes complain to Elroy his TV jokes often go over my head because I was born in 1985. I suspect most of my knowledge about popular 80s TV shows comes from constant pop-culture references. So there’s a robot party on tomorrow night at Smashrine HQ. After thinking my costume was going to involve many metres of foil, I had a flash of inspiration and am taking a slightly more esoteric approach to the evening. After a recent conversation about William Gibson’s Neuromancer with Insane Gazebo, I decided that I’d get all voodoo on the night and go as Legba, Lord of The Crossroads. It’s going to involve neckaces made of old computer parts, a staff lined with network cable and feathers, beads and other voodoo-ey bits and peices. While doing some reasearch, looking for Legba’s veve, I stumbled across a fantastic article. All to do with cyberpunk and society, well written and insightful. I recommend it to anyone who understood the preceeding stentence;

Mexican scientists have turned the country’s national tipple tequila into diamonds, and are seeking applications for their discovery – but the crystals are too small to be used in jewellery.The tequila diamonds could be used to “detect radiation, coat cutting tools or, above all, as a substitute for silicon in the computer chips of the future,” said Miguel Apatiga, one of three researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico who made the discovery.The scientists found that heated vapour from tequila blanco, when deposited on a stainless steel base, can form diamond films.

A Victorian not-for-profit child-care group has offered to buy up to 40 ABC Learning centres after administrators and receivers were appointed to the troubled company last week.Try Youth and Community Services chief executive Damien Mowlam says the group has spoken with the administrators and receivers of ABC Learning and the federal government in a bid to purchase or manage via corporate partnerships between 20 to 40 centres in Melbourne and eastern Victoria.
